BACon PH Movie Review Presents: K-Pop Demon Hunter
By: Dan Rivera
For centuries, demons have feasted upon human souls to appease the ancient entity known as Gwi-Ma. To combat this dark threat, every generation sees the rise of three maidens chosen to become demon hunters. These warriors wield the power of their voices to forge magical barriers called Honmoon, which protect humanity from the relentless attacks of demons. In the current era, this sacred duty falls to a new trio known as Huntr/x, tasked with defending the world from evil.

Story – 4/5
K-pop Demon Hunters masterfully blends Korean mythology, folklore, and demonology with the vibrant, modern world of K-pop, creating a fresh take on urban fantasy storytelling. While the central conflict, a classic battle between good and evil, is familiar, the cultural grounding and innovative integration of K-pop aesthetics make the narrative stand out. The story is straightforward but engaging, with some pacing issues that give it a slightly rushed feel in places. Nevertheless, the rich mythology and strong character moments elevate it, making it a memorable and compelling experience.

Animation – 5/5
Visually, this film is a feast for the eyes. Inspired by the groundbreaking Spider-Verse film, it blends 2D and 3D animation styles with influences from Japanese anime to create a dynamic and expressive visual experience. One of the most striking aspects is the deliberate shift in animation style depending on the scene—especially noticeable when the Huntr/x perform versus when they are off-stage. This stylistic contrast enhances the mood and energy, perfectly complementing the story’s emotional beats.

Music – 5/5
The soundtrack is exceptional, featuring powerful and memorable songs that deserve a spot on your playlist. The cast includes talented performers such as Andrew Choi, Kevin Woo, and the legendary Lea Salonga. A standout track, Takedown, is performed by TWICE members Jeongyeon, Chaeyoung, and Jihyo, adding star power and vocal brilliance. Each song is carefully crafted, enhancing both the story and the emotional resonance.

Overall – 5/5
K-pop Demon Hunters is one of the year’s best animated films. With its spectacular soundtrack, stunning animation, and rich mythology-driven story, it’s a must-watch for anime and K-pop fans alike. Highly recommended and with excellent replay value, it’s now streaming on Netflix. Don’t miss out!
