I mean, seriously, of all the websites out there—for cat videos, for funny memes, for people who like that boring sport, golf—you chose us. You chose BACon! And for that, I am so, so happy! (´。• ω •。`) ♡ It’s more than just a click. It’s you deciding to spend your time with us, and that means a whole lot. I’m just imagining you right now. You’re probably sitting in your room, with your phone or computer screen lighting up your face. Maybe you’re a cosplayer, looking for ideas for your next amazing costume. Or maybe you’re an artist, wanting a place to show off your drawings. Or maybe you’re a gamer, a fellow nerd just like me, who saw “Polyhedra and Pixels” and just knew you had to check it out! (≧ω≦) Whatever brought you here, I really hope you found what you were looking for. I hope you saw all the cool stuff we have planned for BACon Level 8!—the tabletop games on Polyhedra Day and the video game tournaments on Pixel Day! (o´▽o) I love both of them! I’m always inventing new gadgets, so the whole “Polyhedra and Pixels” thing is perfect for me. I’ve even been tinkering with my **SCHAXX** to make it better for tabletop games. (-ω-`) I’m super excited for the Cardboard & Creativity Contest! I can’t wait to see all the cool new games people have made. It’s like you get to see a little piece of their heart in the game. It’s so cool! \(≧▽≦)/ And on Pixel Day, I’ll be watching the Tekken tournaments! I’m not a pro, but it’s like watching a real-life anime fight! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ It’s all part of our 8 Bit Hero’s Journey, you know? It’s going to be so much fun! We have quests like “Retro Gamer” and “Cosplay Spotter.” How awesome is that?! You get to level up and get prizes! It’s like we’re all in one giant video game together! I’m going to try to finish my quests, too! (⌒ω⌒) It’s all about making BACon a place where you’re not just watching, but you’re actually part of the adventure! We’re not just a convention, we’re a whole world waiting for you to explore! (っ˘ω˘ς ) I’m also really happy that we’re using this event to raise awareness about AIDS and STDs. It’s super important, especially for young people. We’ll have booths with information and people to talk to, but the most important thing is that we’re talking about it and helping people be safe and healthy. (´。• ᵕ •。) That’s a huge part of what makes me proud to be the mascot of this convention. ( ´ ▽ )ノ So please come join us in Balanga City on December 27 and 28 at Vista Mall! It’s going to be a blast, I promise you! We’ll have so many cool things happening, from special guests to workshops and contests. BACon wasn’t the first, it wasn’t the second either

Origins of the Anime and Cosplay Community in Bataan

The Bataan Anime Convention, also known as BACon PH, will now enter its 10th anniversary as one of the most attended—dare I say, most popular—youth events in Bataan. It attracts around 5,000 to 10,000 attendees not only from Bataan but also from neighboring provinces and even the NCR.

But did you know that there were other anime events previously held in the province? These events ultimately led Jurineru Daigorou Orochimaru III, RW (short for Resident Weeaboo), to create the Bataan Anime Convention. In this post, we will discuss the pioneer anime and cosplay events that the province hosted.

COB (City of Balanga) Cosplay Community

Mr. Joem, the COB Bataan Cosplay Group, and the Sentro ng Bataan Sining at Kultura spearheaded the COB (City of Balanga) Cosplay Contest, which they held on May 20, 2011, at Plaza Mayor de Balanga.

Back then, cosplay was very foreign, especially to the citizens of Bataan.Unlike today, the local community considered cosplay very eccentric and new at a time when people didn’t really know about it. Although social media networks existed, they remained largely inactive because Wi-Fi and internet connection cost too much and offered limited access.

Most of the event’s contestants and participants were members of the Bataan Anime Nation group, which was led by Mr. Dennis.

The winner of the Cosplay Contest was a cosplayer of Death from Soul Eater. Other cosplayers included Sasuke (a cosplayer readers might be familiar with), Ragnarok characters, Hatsune Miku, and characters from Grand Chase.

Bataan Anime Nation

Bataan Anime Nation is a group of cosplayers and otakus based in Bataan. The group, also called BANAT, comprised individuals of different ages and genders.

BANAT also held its own events, such as a Christmas gift-giving cosplay and small photoshoots. They frequently organized trips and carpools to conventions and events held in the NCR (National Capital Region).

Even though the group is now disbanded, the team’s dream still lives on: to invite and host Ms. Alodia as a guest at an anime and cosplay event in Bataan.

Botakon: Bataan Otaku Convention

The Bataan Otaku Convention (BOTAKON) followed the COB Cosplay Contest as the next anime and cosplay convention, taking place on December 22, 2013.

Since the start of the COB Cosplay Contest, the Otaku and Cosplayer Community had grown, thanks in part to BANAT. Compared to the COB Cosplay Contest, significantly more cosplayers joined this event.

This time, there were contests other than cosplay, such as a B-Daman Shooting Contest and TCG Tourneys.

BOTAKON was part of the City of Balanga Christmas Events. Mr. Joem and Hubby Toys Corner (HTC) organized this event.

PRE BACON

After 2013, several small cosplay events, including College Cosplay Competitions, featured Bataan Heroes Memorial College and Eastwoods College. There were also conventions exclusive to students of Bataan Peninsula State University, such as PiNiCS Fiesta, which served as the culminating event of the BPSU Pilipinas Nihon Cultural Society. Other events included TCG Tourneys and the yearly year-end event of PHG Bataan.

BACon was created not out of the necessity for an anime convention in Bataan, but because of its catchy name. The founder and his friends created BACon simply because it’s fun to say. BACon! BACon! BACon! BACon! BACon! BACon! BACon! BACon!

Until next time! We will present to you: BACon 2016! While waiting, check out what we have for you on BACon PH 2026!
